What we found
Rio Tinto does not produce a formally defined sustainability report; instead a section of their corporate website is dedicated to information on Sustainable Development. An interactive HTML GRI Content Index sits within the Performance sub-section of the Sustainable Development content, providing links to the relevant performance and policy information required to satisfy GRI reporting requirements, or otherwise, providing information on why they are unable to report on certain criteria. The browser-based index meant that it was possible to view a source for a GRI indicator, before using the ‘back’ button to return to the index.
A 12-page Sustainability Review is published within their annual reporting, and is available to download as a separate PDF.
Since this research was undertaken, Rio Tinto has published its 2008 Annual Report, which is available online.
